Henry Dixon Loes was both a composer and teacher who studied at the Moody Bible Institute. "This Little Light of Mine" is a gospel children's song and is considered a folk tradition. The possible theme or themes of the song are thought to be the verses: Mathew 5:16 and Luke 11:33. Mathew 5:16 talks about letting your light shine and Luke 11:33 talks about lighting a candle and letting it shine in the open. The song has been performed many times by various artist and has even been made secular in the version "This Little Girl of Mine" by Ray Charles. The song actually became an anthem of the Civil Rights movement in the 50's and 60's with the help of Zilphia Horton and Fannie Lou Hamer.
