Unbreakable Logistics: How Ukraine’s Supply Lines Fuel Victory

In February 2022, as Russia launched its full-scale invasion, the fall of Ukraine was predicted to be a matter of days. Instead, the world witnessed the unbreakable resistance of the Ukrainian people. For a fourth year, Ukrainians continue to wage a determined and effective defense along a front line stretching over 1,100 kilometers. Behind this resilience stands not only the bravery of our soldiers, but also the robust logistics system of the Armed Forces of Ukraine—proving its adaptability, direct connection with combat units, and flexibility under fire. This is not just a war of trenches, artillery, and drones. This is a war of supply lines, multidirectional routes, and mobile infrastructure. Modern Ukrainian military logistics have proven to be superior to the logistics of the russian army. Today’s war demands massive resources—above all, weapons, technology, materiel, ammunition, and fuel. The fight is waged with advanced weaponry, requiring expert maintenance, repairs, and spare parts. Logistical operations now span vast territories, demanding rapid mobility and seamless coordination. Today’s Ukrainian soldier carries more gear, equipment, and supplies than any predecessor in history. Military logistics is a well-oiled system—operating as a single mechanism—to ensure our troops get exactly what they need: reliably, on time, and without interruption. Without effective logistics support, even the best-trained units lose combat capability fast. Any break in the supply chain can paralyze the most advanced weaponry. Today, we mark a special date—a chance to highlight this essential mission. On May 29, 2018, the Ukrainian Armed Forces formed a dedicated operational group of officers and experts, bringing centralized management to previously scattered supply systems. Thus, the Logistics Forces Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine was born—a strategic-level structure that united supply and armaments. The outdated term “rear services” was replaced with a new one—military logisticians—whose work meets modern government reforms and NATO standards. The Logistics Forces Command stands on four pillars: • Armaments • Rear support • Military transport and its coordination • Engineering and infrastructure support Since the onset of Russia’s full-scale aggression, the scale of military transportation has grown exponentially. Every day, thousands of trains carry personnel, weaponry, equipment, and millions of tons of supplies by rail. Truck convoys play an equally crucial role. Modern heavy haulers—like Oshkosh or MAN tractors, Mercedes or Renault fuel trucks—are the new standard. Trailers with capacities over 60 tons or more than 12 cubic meters deliver fuel, cargo, and equipment to any point, anytime. This mobility allows us to avoid supply disruptions—including in international military aid—despite constant enemy attacks on critical infrastructure: transport hubs, bridges, and power substations. Engineering and infrastructure support are also vital, ensuring units have housing, utilities, coal, and firewood for heating. Power, warmth, and comfort for our troops—that’s their responsibility. They also manage accounting and inventory of defense real estate and land, and oversee repairs. Thanks to this structure, military units function efficiently and get the support they need for living and operations. In close cooperation with all elements of the Armed Forces, the Logistics Forces Command has endured the most severe challenges—showing strength, resilience, and seamless teamwork. Glory to Ukraine!
