How to Play Outside Changes
In Chick's first live workshop (part of the Chick Corea Academy), he answered the question, "How do you approach playing outside of changes?". Chick's advice was this: "Try not thinking about a key and not thinking about changes and just start your vamp and have it be the stable point that you keep returning to and make melodies on top of it without reference to anything. Just make a melody! And (you) don't have to play in a particular key... Basically, if you just try thinking in terms of making a melody and creating whatever kind of melody you want. There's no rule that says you have to put an e minor scale into an e minor chord. You can put any kind of a scale into any kind of a cord. So it's just a matter of experimenting, right? ... Musicians use that term, are you inside or are you outside? The best place to be is inside when you want to be inside and outside when you want to be outside. Be anyplace when you want to be anyplace. I think the stable factor for me in my mind is a melody. Because you are expressing something, you are saying something." Academy students are given the opportunity to ask Chick questions and even appear with him during his weekly live workshops.
