Where did the devotion to the Virgin Undoer of Knots originate? This devotion began in Germany around 1700. Commissioned by a priest in Augsburg, the painter Johann Melchior Georg Schmittdner painted a painting of the Virgin Mary, inspired by the words of Saint Irenaeus. Saint Irenaeus (martyr who died in 202) stated that "The knot caused by Eve's disobedience was untied by Mary's obedience. What the virgin Eve had tied through her unbelief, the virgin Mary had untied by her faith." This painting of the Virgin Undoing Knots has been venerated since 1706 in Augsburg, Germany. Its original name was "Nuestra Señora de Knotenlöserin." It hangs in the ancient church of St. Peter in Perlack, Augsburg, Germany.
