Investigating Helene flood damage in North Carolina…a geologic event?
Lots of rivers flooded MASSIVELY during Helene, and the Big Hungry River in Henderson County, North Carolina, was no exception. This video shows what the Big Hungry gorge looks like after the flood. I had covid (4th time...) while doing the field portion, so excuse the strange voice! Lots of soil was scoured from the riverbanks, producing a strange visual that looks out of place in the southern Appalachians. The river is still moving lots of sand at low flow, which is also odd for the region. Some really large boulders moved in this flood, and I'll have to make a follow-up video that revisits some of the biggest ones to try to figure out just how much they moved. This video also shows NOAA imagery from Deep Gap Road and Oleta Road, where flooding was severe further up in the Big Hungry watershed.
