Located in Phu Yen City, the provincial capital of Phu Yen Province, Vietnam, “Chùa Chuông” (Chinese characters: 金鐘寺 / Kim Chung Tự) is a very famous ancient temple founded during the 15th-century Lê Dynasty. Among the ruins of “Phố Hiến”—which once flourished as an international trading port—it is known as the most beautiful temple with the highest architectural value and is hailed as “Phố Hiến’s foremost temple.” Architectural Features: The temple grounds adopt the traditional Vietnamese temple architectural style known as “Nội Công Ngoại Quốc” (a structure where the inner layout resembles the Chinese character ‘工’ and the outer layout resembles the character ‘国’). Three-Gate Pavilion (Tam quan): The moss-covered tiled roof evokes a sense of its deep history. Dragon’s Eye Pond and Stone Bridge: The lush garden leading into the temple grounds and the picturesque bluestone bridge create a solemn atmosphere. Main Hall (Upper Hall): It features exquisite woodcarvings dating from the Lê Dynasty to the Nguyễn Dynasty. Precious Buddhist Statues and Cultural Assets Chun Temple is also highly regarded as a treasure trove of Buddhist art. The Eighteen Arhats: Considered among the most beautiful Arhat statues in Vietnam, the 18 Arhats are vividly depicted, each with distinct and expressive facial expressions and gestures. Relief of the Ten Kings of Hell: These wooden reliefs depict the law of cause and effect and scenes from hell, conveying teachings that encourage people to perform good deeds. Stele of Kim Chung Temple (erected in 1711): This stele is a historically invaluable document, detailing not only the temple’s history but also the bustling activity and trade at the international port of Pho Hien during that era.
