OUI le matériel c'est IMPORTANT
This video discusses a topic that often sparks debate among videographers, content creators, and filmmakers: is equipment really as important as we think? But over time, I've come to understand one essential thing: it's not the equipment that makes cinematography. Becoming a better cinematographer isn't necessarily about buying a better camera. It's about learning to observe. Developing your eye. Understanding light. Working on your composition. And above all: learning to do more with less. Yes, video equipment matters. A better camera, a better lens, a better microphone, or better lighting can make a lot of things easier. But after several years of creating videos on YouTube, filming client projects, and progressing in cinematography, I've realized something crucial: Equipment is a tool. Not an end in itself. Sony FX3, Sony A7S III, Sony ZV-E1, Canon R5, Blackmagic, cinema lenses, autofocus, dynamic range, low light, color grading, and image quality. But what truly propels a videographer/director of photography forward is their ability to tell a story, solve problems, develop their creative vision, and find solutions with the resources they have. In this video, I share my perspective on: The true role of equipment in a videographer's development Why buying a new camera doesn't always solve the problem How to develop your creativity in video Why learning to do more with less can accelerate your progress How top directors and directors of photography approach their shoots The importance of artistic vision over equipment Why problem-solving is an essential filmmaking skill How to create better videos without investing more We also discuss creators like Gawx, Peter McKinnon, and Matti Haapoja, as well as cinema and cinematography through interviews with Lawrence Sher on Joker. Because ultimately, what makes an image memorable isn't just the camera used. It's the idea behind the image. It's about how it was conceived, constructed, and told.
