Ángel Teruel: El torero que le dijo basta al negocio de los toros
In 1973, Ángel Teruel only fought in two bullfights across Spain. The previous year he had fought in thirty-five. There was no goring, no failure, no booed performance behind that fall. What there was was a twenty-three-year-old bullfighter, at the peak of his abilities, standing up to the promoters who ran the bullfighting business behind the scenes. In this chapter, we tell the true story of Ángel Teruel's retirement: how a young man from the Embajadores neighborhood reached the elite of bullfighting with the help of the Dominguín family, why that same machine that launched him ended up closing the doors of the bullrings to him, and what happened when he decided to call it quits at the height of his career. And above all, we tell how he returned. Because Ángel Teruel didn't stay out of the ring for even a full year, and what he did from 1974 onward is one of the greatest lessons in pride and skill that Spanish bullfighting has ever produced.
