Fixing Common Shooting Problems | Missing Left
I often tell students that a pistol is the dumbest weapon ever designed. Do I mean that literally? Not really. What I mean is that there is nothing natural or intuitive about it. In order to effectuate the principles of a good grip, for example, one must learn how to place the hands on the grip in certain ways and tense/relax certain parts of the hands in ways that do not feel natural or comfortable to most (until you get used to it). Pulling a trigger seems like a no brainer to a lot of beginner shooters but we all know that’s not the case. In order to correct Core Skill problems for shooters we first have to diagnose what the root of the problem is, as there are different factors that can lead to similar results (missed shots). In this video we address one of the most common problems experienced by pistol shooters of all skill levels: Shooting left (for a right-handed shooter). In correcting this mistake, we take a two-pronged approach. One part is solving the actual error, and the other is counteracting the mistake with the control hand (support hand). Typically (assuming sight alignment is correct) the root of the problem is that the shooter is not “pushing” the trigger straight back and is unknowingly moving the entire gun in that direction and they are not isolating the motion of the trigger finger from the sympathetic squeeze of the rest of the fingers in the shooting hand. The support hand has a crucial role in correcting this as well. If the control hand (non-shooting hand) is placed correctly on the frame of the gun and is applying enough consistent pressure during the shot a bad trigger pull will not move the gun offline as much. I have seen quite a few instructors tell students that the problem can be fixed only by applying more pressure to the control hand. It does help but it is not the actual solution. Think of it as treating the symptoms to a disease without actually curing it. Wouldn’t it be better to do both and be that much healthier?
