In December 1944, the Ardennes Forest was hit by a record-breaking severe winter. 18,000 soldiers of the US 101st Airborne Division were heavily surrounded by German forces at Bastogne. Out of ammunition and food, and lacking winter gear, their commander responded to the German ultimatum with a single word: "Nuts!" But courage alone could not stop the German armored divisions. The American forces needed a miracle, and General George S. Patton decided to create that miracle himself. At an emergency Allied conference, Patton pitched a plan that everyone thought was "crazy": he promised to have his Third Army, which was fiercely fighting eastward, execute an astonishing "extreme 90-degree turn" in sub-zero blizzards, and launch a counteroffensive from south to north within 48 hours. Eisenhower thought he was bluffing, and Hitler's general staff believed it was absolutely impossible logistically.
