Breathe on Me, Lord (Like the Wind Across the Sea) There are moments in life when we long to feel God’s presence but cannot always see what He is doing. This song was written as a reminder that the Holy Spirit is still with us today comforting, guiding, strengthening, and bringing hope, just as the wind gently moves across the sea. The inspiration comes from one beautiful biblical word: Ruach (רוּחַ), a Hebrew word that can mean breath, wind, or Spirit. Throughout the Old Testament, these three ideas are woven together. God’s breath gives life, His wind reminds us of His unseen power, and His Spirit brings hope and renewal. One of the most powerful examples is found in Ezekiel 37, where God tells the prophet to call upon the ruach: “Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.” (Ezekiel 37:9) The same Hebrew word ruach is translated as wind, breath, and Spirit, revealing God’s life giving presence. The song also reflects Genesis 2:7, where God breathes the breath of life into Adam, and John 20:22, where Jesus breathes on His disciples and says, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” Jesus also teaches in John 3:8: “The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” These verses remind us that although we cannot see the wind itself, we can see its effects and in the same way, we may not see the Holy Spirit with our eyes, but we can experience His work in our hearts and lives. The Caribbean rhythm reflects the warmth, joy, and peace that come from God’s presence. Like a gentle sea breeze at sunrise, this song invites us to pause, breathe, and remember that we are never alone. My prayer is that Breathe on Me, Lord encourages everyone who hears it.
