American Reacts to What Does The UK Royal Family Actually Do?

Most Americans like myself assume the Queen and Royal family are simply there for tradition, and that they hold no actual power or government responsibly. Since the USA does not have a royal family I am very interested to see what it is that the United Kingdom royal family does.
