Augustus Is Why YOU Do Not Understand Nero

Augustus is remembered as Rome’s saviour. Nero is remembered as Rome’s monster. But what if Nero did not destroy Augustus’ system? What if Augustus’ system destroyed Nero? In this video, I compare Augustus and Nero: two emperors separated by legacy, reputation, and propaganda, but united by political violence, family trauma, public performance, and the impossible burden of one-man rule. Augustus built the imperial system that Rome celebrated. Nero inherited it as a teenager, surrounded by manipulation, philosophical education, court intrigue, and a Senate that would eventually destroy his reputation. This is not a defence of Nero’s crimes. It is an argument that history’s favourite monster may have been less an anomaly, and more the inevitable product of the empire Augustus created. Rome did not simply produce tyrants. It built a machine that required them.
