Rubber Mixing 101: Dead Zones, High Shear Zones & Fill Factor

In this episode of Rubber Mixing 101, we map the hidden zones inside the chamber: dead zones, high shear zones, and circulation paths. Inside a rubber internal mixer, material can move in three main ways: with the rotor flight in the rolling bank, over the rotor tip gap, or axially around the rotor end. This video explains why fill factor is critical, how underfilling creates dead zones, and why proper filling activates high shear zones where dispersive mixing actually happens. We also look at how rolling banks stretch, fold, bleed, and rebuild material during each rotor revolution — and why rotor geometry, blade angles, axial transport, and intermeshing mixer design all influence mixing performance.
