Lasertec — The EUV Monopoly Nobody Talks About

▶ Forgotten Monopolies playlist:    • Forgotten Monopolies   Everyone argues about ASML, TSMC, and NVIDIA. But there's a Japanese company sitting quietly upstream of all of them that almost nobody talks about — and no chip below 5nm can ship without it. Lasertec makes the only machine on Earth that can inspect an EUV photomask at the same 13.5nm wavelength the scanner uses — "actinic" inspection. Its ACTIS A150 is the only commercial actinic EUV mask inspection system that exists. More than 90% of EUV mask inspection runs through Lasertec; for the most advanced masks, at 5nm and below, its share is effectively 100%. One of the purest chokepoints in the entire AI supply chain. Four battlegrounds: The physics moat: why 193nm optical and e-beam tools (where KLA leads) can't see what EUV light will print, and only actinic inspection can. The invisible toll booth: a ~48.8% operating margin and ~46.9% return on equity, the kind of numbers a true monopoly prints. The AI tailwind: every AI accelerator ships on an EUV node, the backlog stretches past a year, and High-NA EUV only multiplies the inspection load. The catch: a monopoly that sells to an oligopoly of exactly three customers (TSMC, Samsung, Intel), which makes the revenue lumpy and cyclical. An even-handed verdict: the technical monopoly and the margins are real — but it's concentrated, cyclical, and has been openly challenged (a June 2024 short-seller report the company denied and an internal review cleared). The machine is indispensable. The stock is not the same thing as the machine. Not investment advice.
