Gareth Gates performing ''Anyone Of Us'' at the TMF Awards. Gareth Paul Gates, born on July 12, 1984, is an English singer-songwriter and actor. He rose to fame as the runner-up in the first series of the ITV talent show "Pop Idol" in 2002. By 2008, Gates had achieved significant commercial success, selling over 3.5 million records in the UK. Notably, he has openly discussed his struggle with a stutter. In 2009, Gates expanded his career into musical theatre. He played the lead in "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat" at the Adelphi Theatre in London's West End. From 2009 to 2011, he portrayed Marius in "Les Misérables," both in the touring production and in the West End. He also played roles in other musicals, including Eddie in "Loserville," Warner in "Legally Blonde" in 2012, and Dean in "Boogie Nights the Musical in Concert" in 2013. Additionally, he was part of the pop group 5th Story, formed for "The Big Reunion." Gates was born in West Bowling, Bradford, to parents Paul and Wendy Gates. He has three sisters and was raised in a family that fostered children, including a cousin fostered by his family. Gates attended Dixons City Technology College, where he studied art and music at GCSE level. He joined the Bradford Cathedral choir at age nine and became head chorister by eleven, even performing solo for the Queen in 1997. Gates is accomplished in piano, classical guitar, and singing, achieving Grade 8 in each. His Christian faith developed through his involvement with Bradford's Abundant Life church, where he also played guitar.
