7-Day, 6-Night Trip to Southern Laos Day 1 Vientiane - Thakhek, Khammouane Province Looking for Lao durian, Lao market in Vientiane Thung Khankham Market, stopping for some delicious pho, trying Thai durian in Laos Lots of flesh, small seeds, large pods, both sweet and creamy Tonight we stayed at a hotel on the Mekong River in Thakhek Riveria Hotel Thakhek Thakhek Night Market, Center Point Thakhek We had delicious Chinese salad, papaya salad, and chicken rice. Day 2 Thakhek, Khammouane Province - Pakse, Champasak Province Finding local Lao food at Thakhek Market Main Market 2, Thakhek, Khammouane Province Bamboo shoot curry, rich and delicious curry Just the way I like it, sour fish, Mekong fish Steamed eggs with pork, glass noodles, and red crab were also delicious. The Lao pho here also includes squid, which is another delicious flavor We also bought Thai rambutan and Vietnamese lychees We stopped for grilled chicken with Seno Savannakhet Province Tonight we stayed at the Champasak Grand Hotel in Pakse. This restaurant has a view of the Mekong River and the bridge. The catfish salad and steamed fish with lime were delicious. Day 3 Pakse - Paksong, Champasak Province Zipline at Tad Fane Waterfall, Southern Laos Stopped for Lao food. Tried Ma Pei, a slightly bitter dish. The pho was delicious. The vendors were lovely. The restaurant is on the way to Tad Yuang Waterfall. Tad Yuang Waterfall is beautiful. The mist was refreshing. Leaving Tad Yuang Waterfall, we searched for Lao durian. Tried it! My first time trying Lao durian! 90 baht per kilo. Small fruit, little flesh, big seeds, sweet and fragrant. We also bought Lao rambutan. It was just the right amount of sweet and had a lot of flesh. Go to the main market on the 14th floor. Lots of forest products, puffball mushrooms, Mekong fish, frogs, toads, fresh vegetables, bamboo shoots. Local food. The crowd was lively. Tonight we stayed at Champasak Grand Hotel Pakse, same as always. Day 4 Pakse, Champasak Province - Attapeu Province This pho restaurant is delicious. Located on the banks of the Mekong River, we went to Pakse Market. Champasak Province, a large market with Lao food and lots of fruit. Khon Phapheng Waterfall, heavy rain. Continued our journey to Attapeu Province. First time! Stopped to buy stir-fried noodles, som moo (fermented pork sausage), and hot sticky rice. We ate it on the way. The road was very slippery. We didn't make it that night. In Attapeu town, we parked in the car in front of a Laotian house. Phi Phon was very kind and let us shower at her house. Phi Phon's children and grandchildren were very kind and took care of us. They boiled hot water for us to eat the noodles. Day 5 Attapeu Province Farewell to Phi Phon and the younger siblings and continued our journey. The road was very muddy. Slippery all the way. We arrived safely in Attapeu. Day 6 Attapeu Province - Sekong Province - Champasak Province In the morning, we ate local food at the main Laotian market, Attapeu Province. Visit Tad Hua Khon and Tad Faet waterfalls. In the evening, I walked around the Lao Sekong Market. There were a lot of wild food options, including fish, fresh vegetables, and mushrooms. Day 7: Champasak Province Before returning to Thailand, I stopped at a 7-Eleven in Laos for the first time! It was in Pakse, Champasak Province. I walked around the Lao market and bought some Lao durian and fresh vegetables to take home.
