Meister Eckhart, a 14th-century German mystic and Dominican friar. He posed a question that even the Church of his time found uncomfortable: Is the God we believe in truly God? Or is it an image of God created by us? Eckhart stated that obsession can be hidden even within our zeal and piety toward God. We say we love God, but perhaps we actually love the peace and comfort He offers. We say we pursue the truth, but perhaps we are actually just seeking confirmation of what we already believe to be right. Speaking of the 'Grund' (the inner self) and the 'spark of the soul' (Seelenfünklein), the deepest parts of the human soul, he presents a path of emptying oneself rather than seeking to possess God. And finally, he says: "I pray to God to be free from Him." Even 700 years later, this sentence still makes us pause.
