Born in 1937, in the commune of Runcu Salvei in Bistrița-Năsăud county, she dedicated her life to preserving and transmitting a centuries-old craft, becoming a symbol of Romanian cultural heritage. She learned the secrets of making opincă from her husband, the folk craftsman Dumitru Cosmi, and after his death she continued the tradition alone, making authentic leather opincă by hand, using the same techniques inherited from generation to generation. With over six decades of activity, Lelea Floare is considered one of the last representatives of this almost extinct craft. For her exceptional contribution to the preservation of intangible cultural heritage, the Ministry of Culture awarded her the title of Living Human Treasure, one of the most important recognitions offered to the keepers of authentic Romanian traditions.
