Canan İLARSLAN – Harun ŞAHBAZOĞLU / ISTANBUL, (DHA) - Foreign language instruction is being provided to students of the Army, Navy, and Air Force preparatory classes at the Kuleli Campus of the National Defense University School of Foreign Languages. Prof. Dr. Faruk Uçar, Director of the National Defense University School of Foreign Languages, said, “War academy students at our school receive intensive instruction in English, German, French, Persian, Arabic, Russian, and Greek. At the end of the training, our goal is to equip our cadets with four fundamental skills in the target language: reading, writing, listening, and speaking, and to ensure they can utilize these skills in their future careers.” Since October 10, 2022, students of the Army, Navy, and Air Force preparatory classes at the Kuleli Campus of the National Defense University School of Foreign Languages have been receiving joint foreign language instruction. As part of the program, military academy preparatory class students receive 26 hours of instruction per week in seven different languages, including English, German, French, Persian, Arabic, Russian, and Greek, for 36 weeks. The program aims to equip students with the four fundamental skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking in these languages, and aims to enable them to use these languages effectively in their professional lives. The School of Foreign Languages, which provides education not only to cadets but also to military and civilian personnel affiliated with the Ministry of National Defense, operates through the Maltepe Courses Directorate and the İzmir Güzelyalı Education Coordination Office. Courses range from three to 32 weeks in length and offer instruction in 17 different languages, including English, Arabic, Russian, Greek, German, Albanian, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Chinese, Armenian, Persian, French, Georgian, Spanish, Italian, languages from the East-West Balkans, and Turkish. Additionally, the TÖMER within the School provides Turkish language instruction to military personnel from friendly and allied countries. Prof. Dr., Director of the National Defense University Foreign Languages Vocational School Faruk Uçar said, “The School of Foreign Languages, affiliated with the National Defense University, the highest educational institution of the Ministry of National Defense, has been providing joint foreign language instruction to students of the preparatory classes of the Land, Naval, and Air War Colleges at the Kuleli Campus since October 10, 2022. Additionally, our academy also offers foreign language instruction to visiting military students from our friendly and brotherly countries, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and the Republic of Azerbaijan. This international student profile contributes to the school's educational environment, strengthening cultural diversity and bonds of friendship. Under the auspices of the School of Foreign Languages, the Courses Directorate, located in the Maltepe Campus in Istanbul, and the Teaching Coordinator's Office in Güzelyalı, Izmir, provide foreign language instruction to military and civilian personnel of the Ministry of National Defense. TÖMER, a Turkish language teaching center, provides Turkish to military personnel from friendly and allied countries. Regional Languages Department Head Colonel Cemil Yavuz, addressing the need for the Turkish Armed Forces (TAF) to train officers fluent in the languages of neighboring countries due to developments in our region, stated, "The National Defense University School of Foreign Languages provides training in regional languages in addition to Western languages. Colonel Yavuz stated, 'Developments in our region make it imperative for the Turkish Armed Forces to train officers fluent in the languages of neighboring countries.' In this context, considering the current and future needs of the land, navy, and air forces, we provide training in Arabic, Persian, Russian, and Greek to a select number of students.
