Before man, before the mountains, he was already in the forest. « Basajaun » the "Lord of the Forest" is one of the oldest figures of Basque mythology: a giant guardian of the woods and the flocks. In the old stories it was he who taught our ancestors to farm wheat and revealed the secret of the forge not for glory, but because it was his law. When the storm comes down from the peaks, he still cries out to protect the flocks, and the shepherds answer without knowing why an ancient reflex, his memory in us. Later they called him a monster, cast him out of the legends. But he was no monster. He was the last.
