Chinese Immigrants in Pre-Confederation Newfoundland

On August 24, 1895, an announcement appeared in St. John’s newspapers that the Sing Lee Laundry was opening at 37 New Gower Street. It is believed to be the earliest recorded evidence of the Chinese community on the island of Newfoundland. Over the next five decades, about 400 Chinese immigrants arrived on the island.
