My wife and I took a short historical trip through Jindo, Haenam, and Gangjin in Jeollanam-do. At forty-nine, I set out with the thought that I am now standing at another crossroads in life. In Jindo, I followed the traces of Sochi Heo Ryeon, who stayed there to hone his painting skills. From Jindo Bridge, gazing at the site of the Battle of Myeongnyang, I was able to physically experience "why Admiral Yi Sun-sin is great." Facing the sea, I realized that history known only through numbers is completely different from the actual sensory experience. The next day at Daeheungsa Temple in Haenam, I recalled the story of Chusa Kim Jeong-hui. From criticizing the signboard of Wonkyo Yi Gwang-sa, a renowned calligrapher of the time, to changing it to his own calligraphy, and finally acknowledging the original style after his exile... it was a moment that made me reflect on how art, self-respect, and time transform a person. At Dasan Chodang in Gangjin, recalling the life of Dasan Jeong Yak-yong in exile, I asked myself, "Could I have truly endured those times?" It felt as though the solitude of these historical figures was overlapping with my own life. We wrapped up the trip with a full meal of grilled cockles. It was only at the end of the journey that I finally felt a sense of relief. Although it was a short trip, the stories of the sea, history, and people piled up layer upon layer, making it a time that will linger for a long time.
