María Cristina de Borbón Dos-Sicilias🔻 La CORRUPTA esposa de Fernando VII y madre de Isabel II.

Maria Cristina of Bourbon-Two Sicilies, regent for Isabella II, Queen Mother of Spain, and one of the most controversial figures of the 19th century. Her life was marked by power, ambition, and the political and economic scandals that shook the Spanish monarchy. During the years of her regency, following the death of Ferdinand VII, Maria Cristina played a decisive role in the history of Spain. Her secret marriage to Agustín Fernando Muñoz, a bodyguard of humble origins, called into question her prestige. Together, they formed a network of businesses and concessions that fueled accusations of corruption and illicit enrichment. The so-called "secret pocket" became a symbol of distrust toward the Queen Mother and her entourage. In the context of the First Carlist War, Maria Cristina supported the moderate liberals, but the growing popularity of Baldomero Espartero and social discontent precipitated her resignation from the regency in 1840 and her exile in France. There, she continued plotting against Espartero with the support of the moderate party and influential financiers such as the Marquis of Salamanca. Isabella II's return to the throne in 1843 allowed the Bourbon-Muñoz couple to return to Spain. From her palaces, Maria Cristina wielded political and economic influence, participating in railway businesses, mining concessions, investments in Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines, and questionable transactions that increased her fortune, but also discredited her. The national and international press, led by the British newspaper The Times, denounced her corruption. The Revolution of 1854 led to a new exile, while Espartero temporarily returned to power. Years later, after the Revolution of 1868, known as La Gloriosa, many of the scandals that had circulated around the Queen Mother for decades were officially confirmed. Maria Cristina died in 1878 in Normandy. She only returned to Spain during her lifetime under strict conditions, but after her death she was buried in the Pantheon of Kings at the Monastery of El Escorial. However, she previously attempted to have her eldest son become king of Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia. Her figure symbolizes the lights and shadows of the Spanish monarchy in the turbulent 19th century: mother of Isabella II, regent during times of civil war, a woman of great influence, and a protagonist in the most controversial episodes of the country's politics and economy. This video details her career, her decisions, and her legacy, inviting us to reflect on the role of corruption, power, and ambition in the history of Spain. 🔻 SUGGESTION 🔻 You may be interested in these videos related to this Chronicle. ▶The Glorious Revolution of 1868.
