The proprietor of a pawnshop was found murdered, with local rumors attributing the crime to the Netherworld Deity—some even claimed witnessing a spectral banquet hosted by the god. Public opinion blamed Empress Wu Zetian's governance for inciting celestial wrath. Upon hearing this, Wu Zetian dispatched Di Renjie to investigate. Accompanied by his aide Long Jing and martial artist Liu Yue’er, Di arrived in Wei Prefecture. The local governor Gu Xianling insisted the crime resulted from supernatural forces, prompting Di to rebuke his incompetence. At the crime scene, the pawnshop mistress revealed her husband had received a mysterious scroll titled Night Banquet several days before his death.
