Presto ~~ Bach’s Italian Concerto is a dazzling reimagining of the concerto principle within the solo keyboard medium. Written for a two-manual harpsichord, it creates the illusion of contrasting solo and orchestral forces—an innovation that allows Bach to explore the grandeur and interplay of a full concerto with a single instrument. The first movement brims with vitality, its effervescent themes propelled by rhythmic drive. The central Andante is among Bach’s most sublime creations, its haunting melody floating above a steady pulse, evoking an aria sung over a slow-moving bass. The final Presto is sheer exhilaration—fleet, virtuosic, and utterly joyful.
