Building our Alaskan Garden: Clearing Land & Planting Seeds for Food Security at our Off Grid Cabin

In between wind gusts we continue working on preparing the roof for metal, and during the gusts we get started on clearing the land for our garden! The time is just about right for planting outside, so we have a perfect south-facing spot near the cabin where we can establish a couple of raised beds and some in-ground rows for this first year. It's a start to a 2000 sq ft garden that will provide us with food all year long as we continue to develop our homestead, allowing us to fulfill our dream of living a subsistence lifestyle. Baby vegetable starts are going strong and getting good doses of natural light and breezes. Soon the brassicas (broccoli, kale, cabbage, cauliflower and brussels sprouts) will be out indefinitely! We are moving closer and closer to that goal of finishing off the roof, but we need a few more good, windless days to get it done. Fingers crossed it happens in the next couple of weeks! Thomas gets started on the preparations for electrical and plumbing in the cabin by installing furring strips on the bathroom walls where utilities will run. Next will be the kitchen. The flooring lumber is drying nicely and will get a boost when the woodstove makes its debut. Can't wait to see those beautiful rough-hewn boards glow on the cabin floor. Woven into each day is the beauty of this land we call home. Birds are serenading us while we work, gorgeous skies provide our backdrop and signs of new Spring life are all around. It's a thrilling time of year! Even the mosquitoes aren't too bad - yet! Thanks so much for following along on this journey of ours - shaping this raw Alaskan boreal forest into a home where we can thrive alongside our wild neighbors.
