How do you identify grapevine downy mildew, and how should you treat it during flowering to protect the inflorescences and developing grape clusters? In this practical gardening tutorial, I show a real case of downy mildew that appeared in our vineyard during bloom and explain why I decided to treat the entire vineyard. Video chapters: 00:00 Grapevine downy mildew during flowering 00:53 What should you do when downy mildew appears? 01:10 Downy mildew symptoms: oil spots and white growth 01:55 Why does grapevine downy mildew develop? 02:55 Can you spray grapevines during flowering? 03:23 Can you thin grapevine shoots during flowering? 05:07 Treat only the infected area or the entire vineyard? 06:04 Mikal Flash fungicide: application rate and timing 06:48 How to spray grapevines correctly with a mist blower 07:38 How to tell if the downy mildew treatment worked 08:17 Treating grapevine downy mildew during flowering 09:05 How to prevent grapevine downy mildew On the affected leaves, I found pale yellow, oily-looking spots on the upper surface and white downy growth on the underside. These are characteristic symptoms of grapevine downy mildew, caused by Plasmopara viticola. In this video, we cover: ✅ how to identify grapevine downy mildew on both sides of the leaf; ✅ how to recognize oil spots and white downy sporulation; ✅ whether grapevines can be sprayed during flowering; ✅ how downy mildew can affect inflorescences, cluster stems and very young berries; ✅ whether to treat only the visibly infected rows or the entire vineyard; ✅ how to improve canopy airflow without damaging shoots or flowers; ✅ how to apply fungicide evenly throughout the grapevine canopy; ✅ why the underside of grape leaves must also receive good spray coverage; ✅ how to monitor the vineyard after treatment. For this downy mildew treatment, I used Mikal Flash, a fungicide containing fosetyl-Al and folpet, according to the product label and its local authorization. The fungicide rate must be calculated according to the treated area, the label rate and the amount of water used by a correctly calibrated sprayer. Do not increase the concentration in the visibly affected area. During application, I use a fine-to-medium, even spray pattern. The spray must penetrate the grapevine canopy and cover the leaves, including the lower leaf surface, without excessive runoff. The inflorescences must also be protected, but they should not be struck with a concentrated, high-pressure jet. Dense grapevine growth does not cause downy mildew by itself. However, a crowded canopy can remain wet for longer, reduce air circulation and prevent the fungicide from reaching the inner leaves and inflorescences. For this reason, I carried out only moderate shoot thinning before spraying. I removed clearly unnecessary and poorly positioned shoots without aggressively disturbing the flowering grapevines. The remaining shoot thinning will be completed after fruit set. Muscat Ottonel can be sensitive to downy mildew and flower shatter, so every operation must be carried out carefully, without violently pulling large shoots or mechanically damaging the inflorescences. Existing downy mildew spots will not disappear after treatment. The goal is to protect healthy growth, limit new infections and prevent the disease from reaching the developing grape clusters. ⚠️ Plant protection products must always be used according to the current product label and local regulations. Follow the authorized rate, pre-harvest interval, maximum number of applications and personal protective equipment requirements. Product registrations and application rates may differ between countries. Always check whether the product is authorized for grapevines in your country before use. Do not combine plant protection products without checking label restrictions and compatibility. Downy mildew becomes visible only after the infection has already developed inside the plant for several days. Protecting the crop therefore depends on making the correct decision before symptoms spread throughout the vineyard.
