चन्डेश्वोरी जात्रा
Chandeshwori Jatra – Overview Name: Chandeshwori Jatra (चण्डेश्वरी जात्रा) Main Deity: Goddess Chandeshwori (a form of Durga/Parvati) Location: Banepa, Kavrepalanchok, Nepal Time: Celebrated on Baisakh Purnima (Full Moon day of the Nepali month Baisakh – usually April/May), which also coincides with Buddha Jayanti Duration: 3 days of major festivities (with additional days of rituals and preparation) Significance: Celebration of the goddess's victory over the demon Chandasur; a symbol of divine feminine power, protection, and renewal 🌸 Religious and Mythological Background According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Chandeshwori is a manifestation of Durga, created by the gods to slay the demon Chandasur, who was terrorizing the heavens and earth. The battle is said to have taken place in Banepa, where she ultimately defeated the demon — making it a sacred site for her worship. 🎉 Main Events and Celebrations 1. Procession of the Deity (Rath Yatra) A beautiful chariot (rath) carrying the idol of Chandeshwori is pulled through the streets of Banepa by devotees. The procession passes through various parts of the town, accompanied by traditional Newar music, chanting, and festive dance. 2. Traditional Music and Dance Locals perform dhimey, bhusya, and naya khin (Newar musical instruments). There may be masked dances representing gods, goddesses, and demons, depicting the story of Chandeshwori and Chandasur. 3. Animal Sacrifices As part of tantric worship traditions, goats and buffaloes may be sacrificed at the Chandeshwori Temple to honor the goddess and seek her protection. This practice is slowly declining in favor of symbolic offerings. 4. Puja and Rituals Special pujas (worship rituals) are conducted at the Chandeshwori Temple, which is located on the northern edge of Banepa. Devotees offer rice, red powder (abir), flowers, fruits, and oil lamps. 5. Lighting and Decorations The whole town of Banepa is decorated with lights, banners, and flowers. Homes and temples are lit with diyo (oil lamps) and electric lights in celebration.
