Dießen am Ammersee (South Bavarian Diaßn am Ammasä) is a municipality in the Upper Bavarian district of Landsberg am Lech (Germany). It is located on the shores of Lake Ammersee. Situated in the Bavarian Alpine Foreland the town stretches from the shores of the Ammersee to the forested morainic hills of the Saale and Würm glaciation. The urban area consists of the market town of Dießen (with St. Georgen, Wengen, Ziegelstadel, Bischofsried and Seehof) and the formerly independent districts of Rieden (with Riederau, Bierdorf, Lachen, St. Alban and Romenthal), Dettenschwang (with Oberhausen, Unterhausen, Wolfgrub and Abtsried), Dettenhofen (with Pitzeshofen, Engenried, Hübschenried and Ummenhausen) and Obermühlhausen (with Oberbeuern, Unterbeuern and Schlöglhof). In Roman times, the Via Raetia ran through the area of ​​the modern city. The first documented mention of the village "Diezen" dates back to 1039, the name means waterfall. From 1050 a local nobility is mentioned, the family of the Counts of Dießen-Andechs. The counts had their castle in the south of the city on the Schatzberg and founded the Dießen monastery between 1121 and 1127. Around 1140 the family moved to Wolfratshausen and left the town to the monastery, although they still acted as bailiffs. When the Counts of Andechs died out in 1248, the Wittelsbach family took over the bailiwick of the monastery. The place appeared as the market town of Diessen as early as 1251. During the war between Louis the Bavarian and Frederick the Fair, Dießen was burned down by Duke Leopold's troops in 1318 and 1320. After the victorious battle near Mühldorf, Ludwig made the place a banned market. This meant that until secularization in 1803 there were two strictly separate legal areas in the area of ​​today's community, the ducal and later electoral ban market in Dießen and the Klosterhofmark Dießen-St. Georgen. The Dießen market itself was under the control of ducal, later electoral judges, who were also responsible for the Ammersee and, since 1599, also for the Bayerdießen forest area west of the city. This market judge office even held blood or high jurisdiction. During the Thirty Years' War, the city was sacked by Swedish troops in 1632 and most of the residents fled either to the island of Erlaich in the lake or to the extensive forests around the city. During the War of the Spanish Succession, Dießen was plundered again by Austrian troops in 1703, and the population fled again to the island of Erlaich in the lake. As early as 1704 there were further raids by hussars. In 1743 and 1744 there was another occupation by Austrian troops. The monastery church, the Marienmünster, was rebuilt between 1732 and 1739 by the baroque master builder Johann Michael Fischer. The monastery was dissolved in 1803 as part of secularization and parts of the monastery were demolished and most of its land was sold. With the beginning of steam shipping on the lake and the railway connection from Augsburg to Weilheim towards the end of the 19th century, Diessen became a magnet for artists and a center of the arts and crafts movement. From the 1920s onwards, the city expanded in all directions with new settlement and building areas.
