This is Harriet – an Englishwoman who first came to Hydra with her mother when she was only ten years old. She immediately fell in love with the island – so much that her family decided to stay and make it their home. From the very beginning, Harriet’s life was closely tied to animals. She first sat on a horse at just eighteen months old, and by the age of three she was already taking riding lessons. She went to school here on Hydra, learned to speak Greek, and grew up surrounded by the island’s traditions. When she finished high school, her biggest dream was to become a veterinarian. She missed the entrance by just a little, and instead chose another path – she joined the British Army, where she became a dog handler. Those four years gave her invaluable experience, but when she was offered a transfer to the Military Police, Harriet realized this wasn’t her way. She returned to Hydra to find her true place. At first, she worked in a café, still wondering what the future would hold. During that time, she already had Chloe – her first horse. When the Greek economic crisis struck, many advised her to sell Chloe, but Harriet refused. Instead, a new idea was born – to turn riding into her life and her work. In 2014, she founded “Harriet’s Hydra Horses.” It wasn’t just a business – it was a life choice. Riding along the island’s mountain paths and tracks became her way of sharing both her love for horses and her love for Hydra with others. It was then that she also met her husband, Vassilis – a builder by profession, who soon became her strongest support. He built the stables and worked alongside her as their dream grew. Six years ago, life brought a serious trial – Vassilis suffered two heart attacks, at a time when their son was only two years old. It was a frightening moment, but thankfully he pulled through. Today, he looks after their son and continues to help Harriet with the horses. Now, Harriet’s Hydra Horses has become part of the island’s rhythm. On Hydra, there are no cars – people move by foot, by donkey, by boat, or on horseback. And a ride with Harriet is more than just entertainment – it’s a way to experience the island through her eyes, to hear her story, and to feel how tradition and the present meet in one place.
