After cutting ties with long-standing producer Quincy Jones, Jackson was on his own for the first time and felt the need to prove himself as an artist. The stakes were high, as at the dawn of a new decade and after conquering the pop charts in the 1980s like no other, it was a near impossible act to follow. Jackson needed to reinvent his sound in order to recruit a new generation of fans, but at the same time resonate with older ones with the melodies and catchy hooks they had become accustomed to. Michael Jackson was able to blend them both in a perfect balance and stretch his creative capabilities to its limits.
