Communities like Hope Vale, Yarrabah, Cherbourg and Aurukun have histories steeped in complexity, stemming from their establishment as either Christian missions or government reserves, where thousands of Aboriginal people were forcibly relocated in the early to mid-1900s. In recent years the Cape York communities have made headlines for violence and social instability. In early 2020, six houses were firebombed during unrest which sparked the stabbing death of a man. Many fled the town, but Mr Ornyengaia said the community is now changing and healing. "We had family problems and stuff like that but now they are all coming back together," Mr Orynengaia said. "I like to see it like that because our old people have never been fighting like this before." When the Voice to Parliament pre-polling came to Aurukun, Mr Orynengaia voted yes in the hope that the community could be better represented. "We want someone from here.
