Bob Dylan – With God on Our Side | MTV Unplugged (1994)
Some Dylan songs never stop asking difficult questions. With God on Our Side began life in 1963 as one of Dylan’s most direct and unsettling songs -a long, steady reflection on war, patriotism, violence and the stories nations tell themselves. More than thirty years later, Dylan brought the song back for MTV Unplugged. That choice alone makes this performance special. In a set largely built around well-known songs from across his career, Dylan returned here to one of his earliest and most uncompromising compositions. Stripped of studio weight and electric force, the song emerges again in acoustic form — older, calmer, but no less serious. Time has changed the voice, of course. But that is part of what gives this performance its power. The young Dylan sang the song with sharpness and moral urgency. The Dylan of 1994 sings it with weather, memory and experience in the voice, and that changes the emotional weight of every verse. Curator’s note: What stands out here is the gravity in Dylan’s delivery. He does not oversell the message. He lets the song speak in its own measured way, and the older voice gives the words a different kind of authority — less accusatory, perhaps, but no less haunting.
