Some Dylan songs never stop asking difficult questions. More than thirty years later, Dylan brought the song back for MTV Unplugged. That choice alone makes this performance special. In a set largely built around well-known songs from across his career, Dylan returned here to one of his earliest and most uncompromising compositions. Stripped of studio weight and electric force, the song emerges again in acoustic form — older, calmer, but no less serious. Time has changed the voice, of course. But that is part of what gives this performance its power. The young Dylan sang the song with sharpness and moral urgency. The Dylan of 1994 sings it with weather, memory and experience in the voice, and that changes the emotional weight of every verse.
