ABOUT THE SONG I had just moved to Toronto. I didn’t know many people there and was feeling quite lonely. But the new scenery had me feeling optimistic and excited about meeting new people, so when I moved back home to Winnipeg in the spring of 2022 I found myself day dreaming about the kind of life I might have had and what kind of people I would have met if I had stayed. This song is about that nervous excitement of new possibilities that come with a new crush. I demoed this tune in one night with Rhythm Ace samples from my drum machine and recorded the acoustic guitar direct in. I wrote the lyrics over that groove and chord progression and sang while sitting down holding a mic in my hand, thinking I would replace everything later if I ever cut the song for an album. But we ended up keeping all this stuff, including the original vocal. I could never beat that initial emotion from the demo when trying to re-track it – the sound of those brand new words in my mouth was the exact right blend of uncertainty and optimism. Later on, I added the main hook on an old 50’s Kay lap steel and doubled it with my grandfather’s Les Paul Special. My pal Keiran Placatka heard the demo and added a bunch of amazing synth, piano and vocoder harmonies. Dylan MacDonald (aka Field Guide) added some beat to the drum machine on his Ludwig kit. These additions brought the song to life and really revealed a sonic direction to me for the rest of the album I was working on.
