It was a very enriching experience to walk its paths and learn the story behind each grave, its commemorative statues, and ornate mausoleums, reflecting the Victorian era in which it was established. Until the creation of this cemetery in 1831, the death of a Protestant in Spain was a very serious problem, as there was no legal framework for such an eventuality. Since cemeteries were sanctified by the Catholic faith, the bodies of non-Catholics could not be buried there in Spain.
