Backlighting is often seen as difficult or something to avoid, as it can darken faces or blow out backgrounds. However, with the right techniques, it can actually create incredibly dramatic photos. In this video, I'll explain three tips for using backlighting to your advantage, step by step. The topics covered include choosing soft light, exposure and post-processing to prevent overexposure (overexposure is difficult to recover even with RAW, but shadows are often preserved), and how to utilize backlighting to create rim light, backlit light, and bokeh. While people are the easiest subjects to understand, you can enjoy this technique with plants and buildings as well. First, try taking a photo with one person as the main subject in the dappled sunlight of the evening. You'll see a dramatic improvement in your photos.
