Is Enlightenment Worth It? | Visiting Hsi Lai Temple

I'm visiting Hsi Lai Temple of the Chinese Mahayana Buddhist order, Fo Guang Shan. I used to visit frequently during my university studies, and I took refuge in the Triple Gem here many years ago. But the monks here are far more disciplined in their spiritual practice - they renounce material pursuits to dedicate their lives to achieving enlightenment and helping others do so as well. As laypeople, should we pursue the same ideal? Can we? How do we renounce attachment to desires and worldly pursuits while still acting in the world? Why not just pursue our desires and improve our lives the best we can?
