YOUR PERSPECTIVE IS LYING TO YOU: IT'S COSTING YOU YOUR LEADERSHIP
I was about five or six years old the first time I plunged my hands into snow. I had never seen snow before. I did not even know what it was. I was born in the Caribbean, where snow was unheard of. But there I was, throwing snowballs with the other kids, laughing and completely unaware of what was coming. When my hands went numb and my fingertips started to hurt, I did what I thought was the next best thing. I ran inside and put them under warm water. But after what my hands had just experienced, the warm water felt like fire. That moment was the first time I experienced perceptual contrast. I didn’t know it then, but I was learning an essential leadership skill. In this episode of The Deep Dive, I’m talking about one of the most expensive blind spots in leadership: perspective. The lens through which you see a situation shapes how you try to solve it. Your lens determines how you lead through every crisis, conflict, opportunity, and season of uncertainty. I’ve sat with executives, pastors, healthcare leaders, and organizational change-makers across the country. And the pattern I see most often is not a skill gap or a resource problem. It is a perspective problem. Two leaders can be experiencing the same crisis. Their teams can have the same level of talent and skill. They can be under the same level of pressure. Yet one sees a threat while the other sees an opportunity. And that makes all the difference. That single shift in perspective may be worth more than any leadership course or strategic plan. Yet most leaders never address it. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🎯 IN THIS EPISODE, YOU’LL DISCOVER: → The psychology of perceptual contrast and why your brain may be distorting your leadership reality right now → The two perspective traps that derail even the most gifted leaders: overestimation and underestimation → What Elisha knew in 2 Kings 6 that many modern leaders never learn → The Perspective Audit: three questions every leader must ask when discouragement starts winning → How to build your Jonathan List: the inner circle that recalibrates your lens when you can’t see clearly → The one prayer that opens your eyes to what God is already doing in your situation ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ This episode is for you if: ✔ You’re an executive leader carrying more than your team knows✔ You’re a healthcare leader navigating constant institutional pressure✔ You’re a pastor or faith leader who has started to question your calling✔ You’re an organizational change-maker who is tired of leading uphill✔ You’ve ever looked at your circumstances and thought, “It’s over” It’s not over. You may just need a new lens. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 📖 REFERENCED IN THIS EPISODE: Philippians 4:12 — “I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation” 2 Kings 6 — Elisha and his servant surrounded by the army Influence by Robert Cialdini — The college letter story ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ⏱ CHAPTERS 00:00 First Encounter With Snow and Perceptual Contrast 01:12 Welcome and Podcast Introduction 01:29 Why Perspective Matters for Leaders 02:50 Dealing With Discouragement and Critics 03:33 Understanding Perceptual Contrast 05:12 Story: The College Letter and Shifting Perspectives 07:11 Applying Perspective in Leadership08:00 Biblical Wisdom on Contentment and Perspective09:00 Crisis vs. Opportunity: The Leader’s Perspective 10:02 Common Leadership Traps and Staying Anchored 11:14 Identity, Calling, and God’s Assurance 12:00 Seeing Beyond the Surface: The Story of Elisha’s Servant 13:59 Encouragement and Moving From Fear to Faith 14:54 Surrounded by God: A New Lens on Challenges 15:56 The Power of a Perspective Shift 17:12 Practical Next Steps: Auditing and Reframing Your Perspective 19:12 Building Your “Jonathan” Support Network20:27 Spiritual Practice: Praying to See as God Sees20:54 Closing Thoughts and Community Invitation ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🔔 SUBSCRIBE TO THE DEEP DIVE New episodes drop regularly for leaders, dreamers, and change makers who want to make a lasting impact in the boardroom, in the church, in the community, and at home.
