El hallazgo de Sutton Hoo: oro, plata mediterránea y un casco excepcional
What can a grave tell when the body has vanished and the ship survives only as an imprint in the earth? In this video, we travel to Sutton Hoo, in Suffolk, to explore a key Anglo-Saxon burial site from early medieval Europe. In 1939, on Edith Pretty's estate, Basil Brown began uncovering iron rivets that traced the outline of a nearly 27-meter-long funerary vessel. The wood and bones had disappeared, but sediment stains, rivets, and grave goods allowed for the reconstruction of a 7th-century burial ceremony. 🔍 In this documentary, you will discover: The 1939 excavation and the imprint of the funerary vessel beneath Mound 1. Why the acidity of the soil destroyed the human remains and other organic materials. The Anglo-Saxon grave goods: gold, Mediterranean silver, Frankish coins, distant garnets, and ceremonial objects. The Sutton Hoo helmet as a piece of protection and a visual symbol of power. The trade networks that connected East Anglia with Europe, the Mediterranean, and more distant regions. The hypothesis that links this burial to Raedwald, king of East Anglia. Sutton Hoo was not a Viking burial: it belongs to the Anglo-Saxon world and predates the Viking Age. Its value lies in what it reveals about politics, economics, beliefs, and cultural contacts in early medieval England. ⏳ VIDEO CHAPTERS: 00:00 - A Ship's Footprint Beneath the Mound 01:56 - Sutton Hoo in 1939: Edith Pretty and Basil Brown 02:58 - A Funerary Ship Nearly 27 Meters Long 03:19 - Why No Bones Were Found in the Grave 04:47 - The Sutton Hoo Helmet and All the Grave Goods: Gold, Mediterranean Silver, and Frankish Coins 06:16 - Distant Garnets and Trade Networks 06:51 - Raedwald of East Anglia?
