In this video, I focus on students with heightened cognitive ability. In psychology, this is referred to as ‘General intelligence’ or G. Cognitive ability can be measured with an IQ test. Giftedness creates a number of challenges and opportunities at school and in the student's life. There are various checklists used by experts to identify giftedness. A widely used one is the SI-BeL (Signaling and Identification of Gifted Students) by GCO Fryslân. Early identification can be beneficial for providing the right support in the child's development and thereby preventing future problems. As a teacher, you have an important role in identification, referral, and daily support, but you cannot make the diagnosis yourself. Betts & Neihart developed six profiles of gifted students. The profiles are the self-directed autonomous learner, the adaptive successful learner, the withdrawn learner, the challenge creative learner, the twice-exceptional learner, and the at-risk learner. You can use these profiles to gain more insight into the risks and needs of different gifted students.
