It's a special type of function expression. A function is invoked as soon as it is defined. By doing so, we've got some performance advantages. Basically, a function, most often an anonymous function, is used in an IIFE. Since the components could be variables or nested functions inside IIFE, they would be local to the expression. Can't be accessed, so immediately after the expression, the components inside the expression will be discarded. Which makes the expression so special.
