With thanks to Norwich Arts Centre Management and lighting and Channel One Management Rachel Bevan. Today's Sound System culture reflects the multicultural identity of contemporary Britain. Diversity is reflected in the faces, gender and age of the audience, where people come to experience the music and savour the atmosphere. Its origins can be traced back to Jamaica where the peoples music was played on the streets and then UK Blues parties, facilitating the entry of Rocksteady, Reggae and Dancehall music. The emergence of Rastafarian culture has made a distinctive impact on Sound systems through heavy base lines, and rhythmic dub loops with spiritual and political overtones. Brothers Mikey Dread and Jah T were born into this culture through their father (Admiral Bailey Sound) developing their own Sound System in 1979 and adopting the name Channel 1 in deference to Jamaica's infamous recording studio. Surveying the culture; there is an ethos of community and family that embraces people from all backgrounds whilst embracing the values of Respect, Peace, Love, and Unity.
