CIDADE ARENÁPOLIS - MATO GROSSO

Arenápolis is a Brazilian municipality in the state of Mato Grosso. It is located at a latitude of 14º27'01" south and a longitude of 56º50'46" west, at an altitude of 247 meters. Its estimated population in 2016 was 9,576 inhabitants. It has an area of 416.785 km². The municipality arose due to the search for diamonds in abundant gravel, and led hundreds of people from the 18th century onwards to occupy the banks of the Ribeirão Areias river and populate the village that would be known as Areias, which much later became independent, having its first name replaced by another more sonorous one, becoming known as Arenápolis. In Arenápolis is located the pole of inaccessibility of the South American continent, that is, the place furthest from the ocean at 14.05°S 56.85°W. The mining activity in the Ribeirão Areias region, which gave the municipality its name, is as old as the historical development of Diamantino. It dates back to the 18th century. The formation of the city It properly began with actions triggered in 1936, when prospectors explored the area on the right bank of the Santana River, below the confluence with the Ribeirão Areias, discovering formations favorable to diamond hunting. The dismantling of the promising gravel began, and unsurprisingly, around 1940, the first gems were panned on the banks of the Areias. As the discovery spread, new prospectors flocked to the region. In view of the first human contingents moving en masse to the site, a pioneering settlement was soon formed, a mining hamlet that was named Areias, in reference to the Ribeirão Areias. The first ranches were built according to the natural features. With the emergence of the first commercial establishments, with new, not-so-temporary constructions, there was a significant improvement in the urban street layout of the town. Foundation of the municipality The municipality was created by State Law No. 704, of December 15, 1953, authored by Deputy Humberto Marcílio. The name was changed to Arenápolis, as it was considered more appropriate. However, they did not remove the greater meaning of the origin of the municipality's name, which is a reference to the Areias River. Administrative formation Elevated to the category of municipality and district with the name Arenápolis by State Law No. 704, of December 15, 1953, being separated from the municipality of Barra do Bugres, it was officially installed on February 5, 1954, in the framework established to be in effect from 1954 to 1958, the municipality until then consisted only of the headquarters district Arenápolis (former village of Areias).
