When specialists actually compared those ancient manuscripts to the Bible we have today, they found multiple simultaneous manuscript traditions with different readings, different theology, and in several cases — different conclusions about what the text originally said. Emanuel Tov, the Orthodox Jewish scholar who ran the Dead Sea Scrolls publication project for twenty years, documented that approximately 40% of the biblical manuscripts at Qumran represent traditions other than what the Masoretic standardization preserved. The Masoretes didn't recover a pristine original. They chose one tradition and elevated it above the others.
