New research shows that our metabolism plays a much larger role than previously thought. Controlled by the brain, influenced by hormones, and surprisingly active fat, it can become unbalanced. Endocrinologist Tim Hollstein from the Helmholtz Institute in Leipzig is researching why metabolism varies so much from person to person. One important finding: Some people burn energy particularly efficiently, thanks to active brown fat, which produces heat instead of fat storage. Stephanie Kullmann from the Helmholtz Institute in Tübingen has discovered that an unhealthy diet disrupts insulin sensitivity in the brain – long before the scales show excess weight. The hormone insulin not only acts in the body but also as a pacemaker for the entire metabolism – directly in our brain.
