Guy Gabaldon (0034) - Voces Oral History Center.

Guy Gabaldon, interviewed by Maggie Rivas-Rodriguez and Charlie Ericson, recounts his life before, during, and after World War II. Born in 1926 in East LA, Gabaldon describes his happy childhood and early influences, including Japanese friends who taught him their customs and language. He served in the Marine Corps, notably capturing over 800 Japanese soldiers on Saipan, a feat recognized by his commanding officers. Despite this, he did not receive the Congressional Medal of Honor, which he attributes to racial bias. Gabaldon also discusses his post-war life, including his business ventures in Mexico and his views on contemporary issues. Gabaldon shared his self-published book's journey and his political views, including his conservative stance and a past anti-communist campaign in Mexico City. He recounted a terrifying night in Japanese territory and his bravery in facing enemy fire. Gabaldon also reflected on his Chicano identity and the challenges of discrimination, emphasizing his pride in his heritage and his determination to prove his worth.
