Should you AVOID homes with an HOA? - Pros & Cons

A common criteria we hear from buyers is that they don't want to be in a neighborhood with a HOA. We understand! It's a common misconception that a Homeowners Association is just present to tell you what you can and can't do. There are Pros & Cons to having an HOA in your neighborhood. A con is that you want full freedom because you purchased your own home, but you now have limits on what you can do to it because of what your HOA allows. Additionally, having an HOA costs you! The typical amount varies depending on the neighborhood but it is important to factor that in when purchasing a home. The HOA is also only as strong as those elected. Your HOA consists of volunteers from the neighborhood that make decisions that hopefully benefit you. On the plus side, your HOA ensures that the homes are kept in good condition. They typically regulate yards that aren't properly cut or flag deterred maintenance on homes. This in return keeps your property value up by keeping your neighborhood in good condition. By having an HOA you also get a voice in your area! As with everything there are pros and cons. Homeowners Associations aren't for everyone but there a clear advantages and disadvantages to consider.
