Mains Answer Writing: Understanding question descriptors & task words

An essential aspect of answering questions in mains is understanding the instruction verbs that accompany questions. There are basically 4 categories of such task words or question descriptors: 1. Description types that demand very superficial listing or enumeration 2. Explanation types that expect answers to be explanatory or analytical but not deep with rigour. Simple explanations without the debates or discussions 3. Evaluative types that demand a detailed discussion with reference to some concepts and theories 4. Comment types-that elicit ones' opinions on issues that have multiple views Students should also be careful in reading the demand of the questions in relation to words limit prescribed for the question.
