A Winter Afan Valley and the Richard Burton Trail Cycle Ride
A cycle ride from Port Talbot, along the Afan Valley on the Richard Burton trail over the Pontrhydyfen Viaduct, the disused Cynonville Railway Station and ending in Cymmer. A slightly delayed start for the first cycle ride of the year. This wonderful trail takes us from the industrial Welsh town of Port Talbot and straight into the Afan Valley along the Richard Burton cycle trail. The route follows the River Afan along side pine tree lined hills with a couple of stopping points along the way and ending in Cymmer, a small village I ended in early last year that sits where three valleys meet. A place that makes you feel that you're much further away that you really are and with an element of being back in time a little. I think I might be getting a soft spot for this place and the surrounding scenery. The ride didn't take as long as I thought it would. My planned stop at the disused Cynonville railway station meant I was eating lunch at just after 11am. I can imagine this trail being quite a different experience in the spring or summer with blue skies that will likely take away that grey stone solitude edge that in itself it quite a nice experience. I hope you enjoy this ride.
